Potash, Premium & Speciality Cost Study

Potassium Sulphates and Potassium Nitrate

The demand for potash fertilizers is met principally by potassium chloride, which is the most abundant – and consequently cheapest – potassium mineral. But there are significant niche markets for several premium products, which some in some circumstances are preferred over potassium chloride. The most important of these, in terms of nutrient volumes, is potassium sulphate, followed by potassium nitrate and mixed potassium-magnesium sulphates. In 2008, the total volume of these premium products was just under 10% of the size of the potassium chloride market, in K2O terms.

Potassium Sulphates and Potassium Nitrate Market Outlook

Potassium chloride is an excellent potash fertilizer, but there are various applications for which a chloride-free product is preferred, and these have supported a steady growth in the demand for sulphate and nitrate salts in recent years.

A number of important changes have taken place in resent years which have threatened to impact both the supply of these products and the demand for them. As the outlook for premium potash fertilizers becomes more uncertain,

Potassium Sulphates & Potassium Nitrate Market Outlook will review the

  • current and future market demand, segmented by major end use, and by key product groups
  • current supply base for potassium sulphates and potassium nitrate, including China’s position as a global supplier
  • current and future cost pressures on the industry
  • assessment of the key challenges facing the industry going forward, and how they will shape future development

This will report will answer the key questions facing the industry:

  • Could resource issues figure more prominently in supporting the demand for potassium sulphate and potassium nitrate?
  • As the shortage of water for agriculture becomes a more serious problem, the use of controlled irrigation techniques will undoubtedly expand how will this affect demand for soluble fertilizers and future growth?

The strong interest in developing renewable energy sources has drawn attention to the role of nitrates as heat carriers in solar power plants. As the construction of large-scale units moves from being experimental to reality, there is a potentially interesting new sector of demand for potassium nitrate?
